Watch these movies, but*...

Macross: Do You Remember Love? — Known for its excellent art, this movie presents an abbreviated and alternative version of the events in the original Superdimensional Fortress Macross series. Stands alone, but with a story inferior to the long-form TV version.
Akira — One of the classics of anime film, famous for pushing the limits of visual effects in animation. Many still find it timeless, but others insist that it is overrated.
Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki — An emotionally engaging Disney-esqe film with a modern visual style, what's not to love?——except the furries.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya — Often described as the "best anime film every made," this is a great title. Unfortunately, viewing it prerequires familiarity with the entire Haruhi Suzumiya TV series, including the infamous Endless Eight arc.
The Five Star Stories — Incomparably cool mecha designs and unique period-art are the highlights of this short film, which is an incomplete and borderline incomprehensible adaptation of a longrunning manga.

*This list is about things that are either good for primarily one reason, or which come with a caveat like a strong connection to another body of work.
